Bill Morton: Fabric

May 5, 2017 - August 20, 2017

Bill Morton has strong ties to traditional fabric dying. Using mulberry paper stencils and various silks or hand-dyed fabrics, Morton builds up his designs with layers of dye and wax. Morton has described the process as ‘…open-ended, offering limitless opportunities for exploration of colour and pattern.’ Time, patience, and focus enable the artist to reflect and adapt to unanticipated variations in the materials. Often the finished fabric is crafted into traditional kimonos or other utilitarian objects.

The pieces in this exhibition are from the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
