Call for Volunteers September 2016

The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie often relies on the generosity of volunteers willing to lend their time and talents to support its programs and events. Below is a listing of upcoming events and the needed volunteer positions.

Exhibition Change Over
September 1-23, 2016

The art exhibitions at the Art Gallery are now changing. We will need volunteers to assist us with installing new exhibits. Volunteers must be 16 years or older.

Conditioning Reports (2 people)
Varying shifts available between September 1 – 2.

When artworks are removed from the shipping crates, they must be reviewed to ensure they were not damaged during transit. Training will be provided.

 

Assisting Curators (2 people)
Varying shifts available between September 6 – 9.

The Levine Flexhaug exhibition features 460 paintings and the curator requires volunteers to assist with the placement of the work. It’s best if volunteers are available to commit to the full four days, but less is also appreciated.

 

Hanging Artwork (2-3 people)
Varying shifts available between September 12 – 23.

The Levine Flexhaug exhibition features 460 paintings and staff requires assistance to hang all the works in an exhibition of this scale.

The Carlstrom Family Green Space will be seeing new art projects and themes as the new exhibitions arrive on September 30th. Volunteer workbees will be held at the Art Gallery to prepare the new materials for visitors and volunteers will be asked to work together with various tasks, including cutting paper shapes, sorting art supplies by colour and/or size, and other small tasks that will supply the Green Space visitors with materials for the coming months. Preparing art supplies is an ongoing task throughout the year for which volunteers are always needed.

Art Supply Prep Kit
Aren’t able to join any workbees and would like to assist with educational tasks?

You can also help the Art Gallery by picking up an art supply prep kit, which includes sheets of various paper shapes for you to choose and cut at home with scissors, and return to the Art Gallery. Families enjoying the art activities in the Green Space will be thankful and appreciate your contribution to the Art Gallery’s primary community engagement program!

Opening Reception
Friday, September 30, 2016

The Art Gallery is excited to open four exhibitions on September 30th and we’re in need of volunteers to help with the big event! Check out the positions below and contact the Art Gallery if you’d like to help.

Event Set Up (2 people)
Time: 2:00 – 4:00 pm*
Two volunteers are needed to assist staff with setting up tables, linens, supplies for the bar, signage, etc.

Coat Check (2 people)
Time: 6:30 – 11:00 pm*
Two volunteers are needed to check coats at the reception area of the Art Gallery.

Greeters (2 people)
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm*
Two volunteers are needed to welcome visitors at the reception area of the Art Gallery.

Green Space (2 people)
Time: 6:30 – 9:30 pm*
Two volunteers are needed to assist visitors with their experience in the Carlstrom Family Green Space. This will include greeting visitors, monitoring the space, and replenishing art materials.

Bar Sales (2 people)
Time: 6:30 – 11:00 pm*
Bartenders are needed to serve alcohol to guests. Must be18 years old. Pro Serve certification is required.

Event Supporters (2 people)
Time: 6:30 – 11:00 pm*
Volunteers are needed as general assistants to Art Gallery staff to ensure the evening goes smoothly and to assist with cleanup at the end of the evening.

*End times listed above are an estimate and volunteers may or may not be required to stay as late as times stated.

The Art Gallery is hosting a Sketch Party on October 1 and we’re in need of volunteers to help with this family friendly, artist event. Check out the positions below and contact the Art Gallery if you’d like to help.

 

Sketch Party Preparations (6 people)
Assist the Curator of Education and Public Programs in preparatory tasks for the upcoming Sketch Party on Saturday, October 1.

Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Volunteers are welcome to stay the whole day, or join us for a 4 hour shift. Four volunteers are needed to assist staff with setting up tables, drawing horses, easels and art supplies. During the event (1:30 – 4:00 pm) six volunteers are needed to assist with greeting visitors, monitoring the space, and providing art materials. Clean up of art supplies, easels and drawing horses will take place after the event ends.

Comic Window Mural Drawing
Volunteers are needed for the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie’s activity area in the common area of the Montrose Cultural Centre before and during the Grande Prairie Public Library’s annual event. Help prepare, set-up and facilitate together with Art Gallery staff as the public is invited to draw their favourite superhero or an enchanted creature, using window markers.

Volunteers Art Gallery

Part-time Receptionist
Minimum 6 month commitment

Front Desk 

  • Regular, weekly shifts of varied hours to accommodate availability of applicant
  • 4-12 hrs per week
  • Monday to Friday, between the hours of 10 am – 6 pm
  • Volunteers will be interviewed for the position

The Art Gallery’s reception desk is one of our most regular and most appreciated volunteer positions because we recognize it requires more time and training than other volunteer positions.

We are looking for someone who has knowledge of and/or interest in visual art, who is outgoing and friendly, and who is comfortable working with the public in a highly professional manner. The typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, greeting visitors, developing thorough knowledge of the exhibitions and Art Gallery history, and providing visitors brief, informal introductions to the art exhibitions. Responsibilities also include processing payments for class registrations, memberships, and donations, as well as answering phones and other basic administrative duties.
