UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS: A Century Of Prints

Dec. 6 – Jan. 31, 2008

W.J. PHILLIPS “Mary At Muskoka”

Exhibition Opening – KIN GALLERY: December 6, 2007 – 7:00 pm

The KIN GALLERY is located at CENTRE 2000 in the Heritage Discovery Centre: 11330 – 106 St. Grande Prairie.

The Prairie Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection has acquired an extensive collection of print works from a wide array of printmaking techniques and an eclectic group of artists producing them. The time line of print works at the Prairie Art Gallery spans almost a century in duration.

In the collection are works by such artists as W.J. Phillips, Maxwell Bates, John Snow, and even a Salvador Dali.

On exhibit will be about seventy works taken from the permanent collection of the Prairie Art Gallery, as well, to round the exhibition out we have borrowed two prints from the collection of the Art Gallery of Alberta.

ARTery: January 2008

C. WELLS
JOHN WILL
The ARTery Exhibition runs from January 4 to January 31, 2008.ARTery is a group exhibition of video and text installation works of art that will be displayed in several business windows on 100 Avenue, Grande Prairie’s main street. ARTery will occur in January, during the darkest period of the year, when Grande Prairie experiences nearly 14 hours of darkness per day.

Artists in the exhibition include Michael Campbell, David Hoffos, Karina Aguilera Skvirsky, Micah Lexier (with Christian Bök), C. Wells, John Will, Anne Troake, and Bill Viola, and is curated by Edward Bader.

The exhibition reflects on the concept of circulation from a variety of perspectives. From the body to language to society and ultimately to life itself, the exhibition places the viewer and the traffic jam from which it will be viewed into an international context, offering opportunities for immediately relevant meaning-making and transcendence to the captive audience, using the means usually employed by advertising, but for the opposite purpose.

ARTIST IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAM

ARTIST IN THE CLASSROOM
Helena Mulligan
To date there have been 22 Artist in the Classroom programs booked from October to December in 2007, with a total of 433 students from Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge and Sexsmith home school groups, where the students have been creatively inspired by local artists. The feedback from both teachers and students has been positive. There has been interest from the teachers to have the artists return to the classrooms again next term or within the same year. Some comments from students were that the projects were ‘COOL’ and ‘AWESOME’. One Home school parent commented ‘..you awakened a creative side in my son I didn’t know he had…We are continuing to get bookings into the new year.

During the months of December and January we are offering free tours of the gallery’s printmaking exhibition located at the Kin Gallery. The tours will be available for grades K – 12 and offer some interactive components while looking at a century of prints and the variety of printing processes. Schools who book the free tour at Centre 2000 will be able to book an Artist in the Classroom program in their school to do a hands-on relief printmaking activity relating to the gallery exhibition.
