The Carlstrom Family Green Space is a free admission interactive gallery and self-directed studio space located on the second level at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie. Since September 2009, we have dedicated a space in the Art Gallery to the interactive exploration of and response to art. This is a drop-in activity space for all ages.
Visitors of all ages are invited to enjoy responding to the Art Gallery’s current exhibitions and themes through free art activities that are designed to encourage reflection, creativity and inspiration. The art projects in the Carlstrom Family Green Space feature a variety of skill levels and are created for all age groups to enjoy, including toddlers, children, teenagers and adults.
Within the space you’ll see workstations with art supplies and instructions to create your own artwork. Visitors are welcome to display their work take their projects home to share with their families and friends.
Visitors are always invited to contribute the piece(s) they make in the Carlstrom Family Green Space to our community art projects. These collaborative artworks allow everyone to participate and for visitors to watch them change and grow over time. We often choose installation art for our community art projects because it’s a contemporary art form that often emphasizes a sensory experience and is rich in material choices easy for everyone to manipulate.
A special note to remember when visiting with children is that the Art Gallery is not responsible for the safety or supervision of children. Children under the age of 12 must be supervised and attended by a parent, guardian or person 14 years or older at all times.
A self-directed space requires all users to take care of the space and to be respectful to the other visitors, so that everyone may enjoy their time here and experience a pleasant visit. We ask each visitor to tidy the space after each visit. This includes restoring art materials to their designated shelf or bin, resetting moved furniture and placing any garbage into waste bins. Always remember that food and drink are not permitted in the Green Space.
We hope you’re inspired to spend time in the Carlstrom Family Green Space during your next visit to the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie. Pop in and see what others are making!

We acknowledge that we are located on Treaty 8 territory—the ancestral Land of the sovereign Dane-zaa, Nehiyawak, Dene, and Otipemisiwak Nations. We acknowledge the many Indigenous Peoples who have lived and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude.
The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie also recognizes that Land Acknowledgments are not enough. Through our actions we commit to truth, reconciliation, decolonization, and allyship in support of Indigenous lifeways and wellbeing.
