The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, in concert with the Sargent Family Foundation, have agreed to terms on endowing the Family’s major gift as a source of support for major projects.
The donation, $1 million, was first made when the Gallery was rebuilt after the roof collapse in 2007. Now, a decade later, the donation has been secured, partially for the Gallery’s future sustainability as cash reserve, but mostly towards the Gallery’s ‘Special Projects Fund.’
Executive Director of the Gallery, Jeff Erbach, elaborates on the impact of the endowment to the community. “The fund for Special Projects, to be spent over generations, directly allows for the Gallery to undertake major exhibitions and public programs. As a free admission museum, access to these funds is critical in enabling us to enrich our community. Really incredible experiences are going to flow from this incredible gesture. We’re so grateful.”
On behalf of the Sargent Family Foundation, Sean Sargent, expresses support for the Gallery’s mission in relation to the aims of the Foundation; “The Foundation looks to make a positive social difference in our community and so we’re proud to partner with the Gallery this way.”
The first project supported by the Sargent Family Foundation will be made public in early Fall.

Rooted in the Oral Tradition of Indigenous cultures of The Peace Region, the artworks in The Talking Path represent collected spoken words and stories handed down for generations. In their integrated, authentic and visual forms, they tell the stories of diverse joint journeys between Indigenous Elders, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous Youths honouring, respecting, and sharing holistic ways of knowing and well-being in family and community.
Told and retold many times throughout an individual’s life, Oral Stories echo the inheritance of a cultural group. Oral Stories may include songs, prayers, epics, stories, histories, speeches, poems, spiritual messages, sacred teachings as well as experiential and sensory knowledge. Nurturing a sense of belonging and identity, Oral Stories speak to the inter-related, multi-levelled nature of Indigenous cultural and sacred teachings to maintain a spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental balance in everyday life.
In collaboration with the Traditional Paths Society of Grande Prairie, this exhibition was curated by Sabine Schneider, Curator, Learning.

We acknowledge that we are located on Treaty 8 territory—the ancestral Land of the sovereign Dane-zaa, Nehiyawak, Dene, and Otipemisiwak Nations. We acknowledge the many Indigenous Peoples who have lived and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude.
The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie also recognizes that Land Acknowledgments are not enough. Through our actions we commit to truth, reconciliation, decolonization, and allyship in support of Indigenous lifeways and wellbeing.
