Artist Talk w/ Michael Flisak

Join Jasper Artist, Michael Flisak on TUESDAY, JULY 25 at 12 – 1 PM as he talks about his art practice and his exhibition, Approaching the Speed of Light, on display outside the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie until October 12th.  *Light snacks and refreshments will be served

Michael Flisak is a long-time resident of Jasper, Alberta. He is very active in the local art scene, as a member of CARFAC and a founding member of the Jasper Artists Guild. Graduating from the Victoria College of Art in 1983, he stayed on at the college for an additional year as an associate, and then stayed to instruct art at the college for an additional three years. After that he moved to Quebec where he studied Fine Art for two years at the Université Laval. He had a studio in Quebec City and became deeply involved in the Quebec art scene.

Much of the content of his work comes from found objects. An abandoned gasoline nozzle mysteriously left at the campground where he worked, glass blocks dropped off outside his studio door or even the bar codes found on commercial objects have all found their way into his work. Found ideas as much as found objects feature in his work. All can be abandoned, picked up and expressed in a new way. Flisak met Chris Cran when he was the master artist in residence at the Banff Centre when he was attending the Optic Nerve Thematic Residency at the Banff Centre back in 2005. Mr. Cran’s interest in perception and illusion resonate with the work he does. Michal sees him of one of greatest artists working in Canada today and this show is partly an homage to him. Flisak recently contacted Cran and asked for images of himself to use in this art project. Chris graciously sent him photos to use however he wished in his art.

In his show, Approaching the Speed of Light, the ideas of modern physics provide the dislocation as he imagines images moving at a high rate of speed, entering the space time continuum where everything is flattening, stretching and the edges of forms begin to blur. The intention is that the viewer be immediately transported into a different way of seeing.

Art Gallery of Grande Prairie welcomes new Curator

The staff and board of the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie are pleased to introduce Jessica Groome as the Gallery’s new Curator, Exhibitions and Collections.

Jessica Groome (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, educator, and administrator, originally from the unceded and unsurrendered lands of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (Kamloops, BC). They completed their Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2007 and obtained their Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph in 2011.

Over the past decade, Jessica has been based in Berlin, Germany, where they have been actively involved in the field of visual arts. Their primary focus since 2018 has been establishing and facilitating programming at La Datcha, a garden project space and residency program located in Berlin, Wedding.

For the past five years, La Datcha has created opportunities for dialogue between visiting artists and the local Berlin art community, offering artists a place to establish roots and cross-pollinate beyond the conventions of a typical gallery setting.

Jessica’s ability to connect communities, their resourcefulness, and their firsthand understanding of the art-making process make them a valuable addition to the role of Curator, Exhibitions and Collections at the Gallery. Jessica started their new position at the Gallery on June 1st.

Jessica shared, “As I’m new to Grande Prairie, I’m also looking forward to connecting with the local Indigenous community and it was wonderful for me to arrive when the Gallery was about to open the “Powwow” exhibition. Since starting at the Gallery, it’s been great getting to know the Permanent Collection, planning for exciting future programming, and being introduced to this diverse and vibrant region.”

Jared Tiller, Manager of Online Auctions and Consignment Specialist at Heffel Fine Art Auction House, facilitates consignments for Heffel’s live and online auctions in the Alberta region. Jared received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts and received his Appraiser Certificate of completion for Personal Property through the International Society of Appraisers (ISA). In addition to his roll at Heffel, Jared is also an Art Curator for a large corporate collection and has assisted with fine art documentation photography for various publications including, Canadian Art (magazine), Avenue (magazine), Art Canada Institute, and numerous catalogue raisonnés, including Jack Bush and Jean-Paul Riopelle.

Northern Alberta Artist in Residence

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Deadline: 5pm MST, April 25, 2023

SNAP (The Society of Northern Alberta-Print-Artists) and Travelling Exhibitions Northwest (TREX NW) invite applications from artists with aprintmaking practice who wish to work in the SNAP Printshop for a 4-week period to develop a new body of work. This body of work will go towards an exhibition at SNAP Gallery and on the TREX WALL. This visiting artist program is open to artists based in Northern Alberta who live outside of major centres such as Edmonton. The residency will take place during the month of July 2023 (unless otherwise negotiated).

SNAP is a Non-profit Artist-Run Centre in Edmonton, Alberta dedicated to the production, presentation and dissemination of Fine Art Printmaking and Contemporary Print Media. For more information about SNAP, visit our About section.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibitions (TREX) program since 1981 to provide as many communities as possible across Alberta with the opportunity to see visual art exhibitions, and to share the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts with the public. A provincially run program, TREX programs highlight the work of Alberta-based artists, helping to promote and encourage artistic careers in the province. The TREX program is host- ed by four different organizations across Alberta, who each manage the program for different region. TREXNW is hosted by the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie. The Northern Alberta visiting artist residency will be selected by jury with representatives from both SNAP & the AGGP.

 

Visiting Artist Residency Program Includes:

  • 24/7 access to the Printshop for a maximum 4 week consecutive
  • A $4000.00 CAD artist fee (paid by TREX NW) upon completion of the residency
  • A $500.00 CAD materials stipend (materials purchased must be used during residency & will be administered by SNAP staff)
  • A maximum contribution of $2000.00 CAD accommodation support
  • Contribution towards travel to and from Edmonton
  • A future exhibition at SNAP and on the TREX WALL, using some of the works/techniques developed during the residency.
  • Potential delivery by the artist of a public demonstration, lecture or workshop
  • The opportunity for broad public engagement with the artist’s project and studio work

Submission Requirements:

  • Artist’s curriculum vitae
  • 10-20 jpegs with corresponding image list
  • A written project proposal of work to be completed during residency

 

Conditions

Visiting Artists at SNAP are expected to engage regularly with our community of studio renters, artists and SNAP patrons through attendance at events, informal critiques with emerging artists and others, attendance at exhibition openings and other events happening throughout the artist’s stay. Furthermore, Visiting Artists will be expected to become members of the Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists covering the duration of their residency term and sign the standard SNAP Print- shop rental agreement outlining terms of use and liability as well as adhere to all health and safety protocols in place during the time of residency. All artists working in the SNAP printshop are required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

One print or artist proof from each edition printed during the residency must be provided to SNAP for retention in the print archive. The work produced during this residency must go towards the future TREX NW exhibition.

Artist Talk w/ Aeris Osborne

Join last years Alberta Artist in Residence, Aeris Osborne SUNDAY, APRIL 23rd at 1PM as she talks about her art practice. Her exhibition YEG Old Houses is on display outside the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie on the TREX WALL until May 12th.
About the exhibition:
Telling Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city residential history. 10 architectural styles of historical old houses in 8 Edmonton’s historical neighborhoods transform into 12 pieces of bold modern impressionist style paintings. The exhibition includes Edmonton heritage landmarks like Alberta’s first premier residence Rutherford House, Magrath Mansion & The Works Headquarter, and other local historical houses that were built from the 1900s to the 1930s in Highlands, Glenora, Westmount, Strathcona, Alberta Avenue, McCauley, Garneau, Riverdale.
Artist Bio:
Aeris is a self-taught visual artist, a Hong Kong -Canadian immigrant who moved to Edmonton,AB, Canada in 2007. She is the 2021-2022 Alberta Artist In Residence / Art Ambassador appointed by the Government of Alberta at Feb 2022 and her newest project is ‘Alberta Old Buildings’. Her previous YEG Old Houses was awarded a 2022 art grant from Canada Council For The Art.

Artist Talk w/ Elsa Robinson

In recognition of Black History Month we will be hosting Elsa Robinson, a featured TREX artist for Artist Programming at a local school and she will be giving an Artist Talk at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie on Thursday, February 23rd at 6PM. Elsa has works featured in the touring exhibition, ‘Bring a folding chair’.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition …bring a folding chair is inspired by annual Black History Month celebrations and recognizes the significant contributions Black Canadians, and Black artists in particular, make to Alberta. With art works exploring history, heritage, identity and contemporary concerns, the artists in this exhibition ‘bring a folding chair’ to the table of Canadian society and the art scene in Alberta and, in sitting at the table, give voice to our common humanity.

This exhibition was curated by Shane Golby and organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program. The AFA Travelling Exhibition Program is supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Artist Bio:

Elsa Robinson is an Edmonton-based mixed media artist, sculptor and painter whose decades-long devotion to artistic practice has imbued her work with vibrancy, versatility and an intuitive spiritual poignancy. Through her years of study, both as a self-taught artist and as a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Art and Design program, Elsa has honed the ability to transmit, through a range of visual modes, her deep love and care for humanity.

Inspired by the ice sculptures carved during the Grande North Winter Festival, Frosty Forms, is a sculptural installation co-created by all community members who contribute to this evolving artwork by sculpting their Prairie Winter Scene using plasticine and other materials.
