In recognition of Black History Month we will be hosting Elsa Robinson, a featured TREX artist for Artist Programming at a local school and she will be giving an Artist Talk at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie on Thursday, February 23rd at 6PM. Elsa has works featured in the touring exhibition, ‘Bring a folding chair’.
The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition …bring a folding chair is inspired by annual Black History Month celebrations and recognizes the significant contributions Black Canadians, and Black artists in particular, make to Alberta. With art works exploring history, heritage, identity and contemporary concerns, the artists in this exhibition ‘bring a folding chair’ to the table of Canadian society and the art scene in Alberta and, in sitting at the table, give voice to our common humanity.
This exhibition was curated by Shane Golby and organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program. The AFA Travelling Exhibition Program is supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
Elsa Robinson is an Edmonton-based mixed media artist, sculptor and painter whose decades-long devotion to artistic practice has imbued her work with vibrancy, versatility and an intuitive spiritual poignancy. Through her years of study, both as a self-taught artist and as a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Art and Design program, Elsa has honed the ability to transmit, through a range of visual modes, her deep love and care for humanity.

Setting aside the notion of appraising art for its commercial value or artistic skill, community art embraces the process of artists connecting with other artists through their art. The strength of community art is that everyone is invited to share their unique voice and creativity to then be experienced by all. This art form focuses on involving community members through the process of art making.

Next week we will begin installing Sock Monkey Scenarios.
In Sock Monkey Scenarios, Vancouver-based artist Thomas Anfield explores in his paintings the labyrinth-like and tangled conditions of being human through the symbol of the beloved Sock Monkey. Inviting us into his carefully choreographed scenes, Anfield’s Sock Monkeys look curiously familiar as we encounter them in universal human spheres by themselves, or in relationship with each other evoking both, immediate self-reflection as well as imagined realities. In their theatrical and anthropomorphic quality, each painting shines light on the complexity of being human and the constant shape shifting we experience in the Theatre of Life.
The opening reception for Sock Monkey Scenarios will be June 16th, from 6pm – 8pm at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.
Check out the exhibition page for updates here.
This exhibition was curated by Sabine Schneider, Curator, Learning.
This exhibition was sponsored by Crouse’s Cleaners.

We acknowledge that we are located on Treaty 8 territory—the ancestral Land of the sovereign Dane-zaa, Nehiyawak, Dene, and Otipemisiwak Nations. We acknowledge the many Indigenous Peoples who have lived and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude.
The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie also recognizes that Land Acknowledgments are not enough. Through our actions we commit to truth, reconciliation, decolonization, and allyship in support of Indigenous lifeways and wellbeing.
